Edwards is uniquely qualified to be senator

There are many reasons why I am voting for Becky Edwards in the Republican primary. I admire her dedication to running a local and issue-driven campaign, her work as a former Utah representative, and her impressive policy record. But Becky is more than just a career politician, and I think that makes her uniquely qualified to serve Utah in the U.S. Senate.

Becky’s background is in social work. She holds a MS in Marriage and Family Therapy and a MSW from Brigham Young University. That training is significantly different from the usual lawyer-to-politician pipeline I see all too often with our government officials. While lawyers perform an important role in society, they are over represented in government.

Lawyers often operate with a win/lose mentality. If they lose, the other side automatically wins, and vice versa. Becky’s record proves she sees things like a social worker. She looks for solutions that benefit everyone. Her opponent isn’t the opposing party. Her opponent is the actual problem, whether it’s the housing shortage, rising prices, or the lack of governmental accountability — all issues she has tackled while in office.

I am so tired of politicians and voters who stand on either side of the political spectrum, endlessly arguing and yelling, and never getting anything done. In order to truly address the problems facing our country and our state we need someone with something better than a win/ lose mentality. We need someone like Becky, who knows how to collaborate and find solutions that work for most people, not just the politicians in power.

I’m proud to have already mailed in my ballot supporting Becky Edwards in the Republican Primary, and I hope Utahns will join me in sending her to the U.S. Senate this November.
