McCae Hillstead, top-ranked Skyridge set tone in season-opener vs. Fremont

The calendar still says it’s summer.

Your heart knows it’s football season.

And in a thrilling start to the 2022 campaign last week, a few Utah high school teams set the tone early.

Here’s our first Top 25 of the year.

1. Skyridge (1-0)

McCae Hillstead set the early bar for the state’s quarterbacks, throwing for 232 yards and three scores (and rushing for two more) in a 52-7 win over Fremont.

2. Corner Canyon (1-0)

CC lost some major weapons to graduation, including BYUbound wide receiver Cody Hagen. No problem, though. Tate Kjar had 206 yards and two TDs in a win over Herriman.

3. Timpview (1-0)

Loaded with talented recruits — Spencer Fano, Siale Esera, Howie Iongi, Pokaiaua Haunga — Timpview took down the reigning 6A champs Lone Peak to start the year.

4. Lehi (1-0)

An impressive opening weekend win, shutting out 6A Davis. Jackson Brousseau had 368 yards in

the air and three TDs.

5. Springville (1-0)

Ryder Burton wants to win the Heisman someday. He wants to be a state champ first after disappointment last year in the playoffs. The Devils are off to a 1-0 start.

6. Lone Peak (0-1)

The defending champs have one in the L column, but the Knights can still bounce back.

7. American Fork (1-0)

Thumped Roy 48-0. Senior Trey Roberts had 100-plus receiving and a pair of touchdowns.

8. Bingham (1-0)

Junior Carson Sudbury rushed 7 times for 114 yards as Miner ground attack punished Weber.

9. Desert Hills (1-0)

A weather delay couldn’t slow down the Thunder en route to a season-opening win over Brighton.

10. Orem (1-0)

The Tigers held on for a 22-21 win over a tough East team.

11. Riverton (1-0)

After a win over Syracuse, Riverton looks to go 2-0 with Dixie up next.

12. Farmington (1-0)

Boston Reinhold’s 61-yard TD set the tone, as Farmington beats Pleasant Grove.

13. Stansbury (1-0)

Hung 72 points on Pineview thanks in part to three scores, 228 all-purpose yards from Dylan Hamilton.

14. Bountiful (1-0)

A thorough 24-0 victory over Highland opens the campaign.

15. Grantsville (1-0)

The 3A champs are looking to repeat and showed their strength holding off 5A Provo to open the season.

16. Sky View (1-0)

Bobcats were 35-15 winners over Salem Hills.

17. Skyline (1-0)

BYU commit Miles Hall hauled in three TDs in a 55-7 win over Juan Diego.

18. Park City (1-0)

The Miners gutted out a 6-o victory over Wasatch.

19. West (1-0)

The Panthers opened with an impressive a 43-0 win. Now they’ll take on one of the best teams in the country, Mater Dei from California.

20. East (0-1)

The Leopards’ triple-option attack came up just short against a good Orem team.

21. Mountain Ridge (1-0)

The Sentinels took down Olympus, 3127, on Friday.

22. Bonneville (1-0)

Grinding out a solid win over Ridgeline team is enough to get them into the Top 25 this week.

23. Brighton (0-1)

The Bengals’ rally came up short against Desert Hills the opener, but that fight bodes well for them this season.

24. Crimson Cliffs (1-0)

Steele Barben led the way in a close win over Green Canyon.

25. Morgan

The 3A favorite took care of business in a 37-14 win over Bear River.
