(Victor) Gary Ellis

November 20, 1933 ~ September 30, 2022 (Victor) Gary Ellis, age 88, passed away at University Hospital on September 30 in Salt Lake City due to complications of old age.

He was born at home in Spanish Fork, Utah on November 20, 1933 to Victor C. and Leona Walkington Ellis. He grew up in Spanish Fork and graduated from Spanish Fork High School and Palmyra Stake Seminary. He then attended Brigham Young University for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Army, serving in the 60th Infantry in Heilbronn, Germany. After his service, he returned to BYU where he graduated with a BS in Chemical Engineering. It was while attending BYU that he met his sweetheart, Kaye Richmond. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple December 3, 1959.

After graduation from BYU, he was employed by Hercules Aerospace, Magna, Utah until he retired in 1992. He held various engineering and management positions that involved the development, quality control, testing reliability assessment, and production of various solid propellant rocket motor systems. After retiring from Hercules, he was employed by Associated Regional and University Pathologists (ARUP) for 4 years where he became the Manager of the Courier Department.

He was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving with his wife Kaye as Ward Young Married Leaders, in Elders Quorum Presidencies, Stake Young Men’s Presidencies, Ward Young Men’s President (twice), and Scoutmaster (twice). Active in the Boys Scouts of America for 30 plus years, and was awarded the Scoutmaster Award of Achievement, District Award of Merit, and Silver Beaver Award. He loved working with the youth and was proud of the many boys that earned their Eagle rank when he was Scoutmaster.

He enjoyed movies, walking with his wife, family dinners and gatherings, Tai Chi, fishing, deer hunting with his brother Brent, coaching little league baseball, woodworking and gardening. He was especially proud of his red delicious apple tree (judged by experts to be roughly 90 years old), and his peonies. The apple tree on the property was there when Kaye and Gary built their home in 1963.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother Mark, and sister Marie. He is survived by his children: Vicki (David) Ottley, Eric (Jana) Ellis and four grandchildren; brother, Brent (Kaye), and Sister-in-Law Julie Richmond.

He fought a good fight, the Cougars won, so he could go. We Love You Dad.

There will be a grave side service at the Salt Lake City Cemetery on Thursday, October 6th, 2022, at high noon.
