Russell Wells Ratterman

1956 - 2022

Salt Lake City, UT—Russell Wells Ratterman

He was one of a kind, an original, he will be missed. Russell passed peacefully in his sleep on November 26, 2022. He was born in Salt Lake City on Sunday, March 18, 1956 to Robert Joseph Sr. and Shirley Wells Ratterman. Russ grew up in Murray, Utah and graduated from Murray High School.

Russell had a passion for IndyCar and F1 Racing. He loved to spectate and memorize driver stats. In his younger years, he enjoyed riding motorcycles and driving fast cars. A thrill-seeker at heart, he also enjoyed sky diving and had many successful jumps. Russell was a numbers guy. He loved maps, he had a photographic memory, and loved to play chess. He was almost always tinkering on some kind of project.

Russ had what he called a “squirmy toad brain.” He had a difficult time finishing projects, or being on time for literally anything. He also had a kind heart, loved people, and was inherently curious about the world. Despite considering himself a “loner,” Russ would engage pretty much anyone in conversation, whether or not they wanted to talk. It was entertaining to hear him on the phone with an unwitting telemarketer. Russ also had a soft spot for striking up conversation with the local garbage truck drivers and mail couriers.

In his later years, Russ enjoyed riding his bicycle around downtown SLC, visiting the City Library, hanging with friends (or girlfriends), and watching movies. These shenanigans were often paired with plenty of Scotch whisky and cigarettes. Russ relished his Bukowski lifestyle.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents Bob and Shirley, his son Tyler, sister Sandra, brother Bob Jr.– and too many friends for his heart to handle.

Russ is survived by his daughter Kira (Andy) Medeiros, his grandson Cameron, and older brother Greg (Bonnie).
